Majulah Singapura, Happy Independence Singapore!

Every August 9, Singapore celebrates its independence. Sixty-one years after independence, Singapore’s story is not simply one of economic growth, but of deliberate policies, strong institutions, and long-term investments that have created an environment where businesses and people can thrive.

Singapore is one of Asia’s most competitive economies. The nation has evolved into a leading economic, digital, and fintech hub in Asia, supported by strong governance, transparent regulation, and a business environment built on trust. Its institutional reputation is reflected in the 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index, where Singapore ranked third globally with a score of 84. Such governance helps strengthen confidence among investors and businesses, reinforcing Singapore’s position as a trusted destination for international commerce and investment.

On this foundation, Singapore continues to provide tangible support for businesses and innovation. Through the Enterprise Innovation Scheme (EIS), eligible companies can receive enhanced tax deductions of up to 400% for qualifying activities such as research and development, intellectual property, and training. Rather than simply creating incentives for businesses to operate, these policies encourage companies to invest in innovation and build capabilities for long-term growth.

Singapore’s economic strategy also recognizes that a competitive economy depends on competitive talent. Through SkillsFuture and broader workforce transformation initiatives, individuals are encouraged to continuously develop relevant skills, while businesses receive support in preparing their workforce for technological change. Investments in healthcare, education, housing, and skills development further contribute to a society that is productive, adaptable, and equipped to participate in a changing economy.

The results are reflected in the numbers. Singapore’s GDP reached approximately S$789.5 billion in 2025, while GDP per capita stood at around S$129,194. The economy grew by 5.0% in real terms in 2025, demonstrating the resilience of a model built around openness, innovation, talent, and institutional strength.

Singapore’s independence story therefore extends beyond nation-building. It is also a story of economic design, institutions that businesses can trust, policies that encourage innovation, and systems that help people grow alongside the economy.

As Singapore enters its 61st year, its experience offers a compelling lesson: long-term competitiveness is built when strong governance, ambitious businesses, and capable people are given the conditions to grow together.
