Fill Your Weekend with a Cultural Experience at Jak-Japan Matsuri

Culture has a way of bringing people together, even when they come from different backgrounds. A familiar melody, a traditional dish, or the opportunity to experience an unfamiliar custom can open the door to understanding another society. In Jakarta, Jak-Japan Matsuri has spent more than a decade creating space for these encounters, celebrating the friendship between Indonesia and Japan through a shared appreciation of culture.

First held in 2009, Jak-Japan Matsuri was established through a collaboration involving the Japanese Embassy in Indonesia, the Jakarta Provincial Government, and private-sector partners. What began as part of the celebration of 50 years of Indonesia–Japan diplomatic relations has grown into one of Indonesia’s largest Japanese cultural festivals. Its continued presence reflects a relationship that extends beyond formal diplomacy, finding meaning in the everyday experiences and interests that connect people across borders.

The festival brings this connection to life through a diverse range of activities. Traditional Japanese performances, including taiko drumming and yosakoi dancing, share the spotlight with contemporary music, culinary experiences, and opportunities to explore Japan’s regional cultures. Visitors can also discover traditional crafts, try calligraphy, and learn about cultural practices through interactive workshops. These experiences offer a more personal way to engage with a culture, allowing visitors to move beyond observation and participate in its traditions.

Equally important is the festival’s emphasis on cultural exchange rather than a one-sided introduction to Japan. Indonesian traditions, including batik-making, angklung performances, and elements of Betawi culture, contribute to the experience. This reciprocal approach creates opportunities for both cultures to be appreciated, reminding visitors that meaningful exchange involves curiosity about one another, not simply admiration from a distance.

The theme “Indonesia & Japan Always Together” captures this spirit. Sustaining a cultural relationship requires more than historical ties; it also depends on creating opportunities for new generations to connect, share experiences, and develop their own understanding of one another. Festivals such as Jak-Japan Matsuri make that process tangible by bringing communities together in an accessible, welcoming environment.

Returning for its 16th edition on 31 October–1 November 2026 at Plaza Parkir Timur, GBK Senayan, Jakarta, Jak-Japan Matsuri continues this tradition of shared discovery. Its lasting significance lies not only in the performances or activities it offers, but in the connections they make possible. Through culture, two countries can find common ground while celebrating what makes each one distinct.
