Happy Indonesian National Film Day to creative people in the film industry, from actors to those who work behind the scenes. Director, casting, music scoring, effects, editors, art directors, public relations, finance and investors and other roles contribute to audio-visual cinematic works, which are capable of touching emotions, encouraging critical thinking and moving.
Right on National Film Day 2026, we pay tribute to the maestro, Usmar Ismail. Born in Bukittinggi in 1921, Usmar Ismail is an Indonesian film director, writer, journalist and national hero. He is known as the pioneer of modern drama in Indonesia and also the Father of Indonesian Film. Through his masterpieces, he records identity, anxiety, and social realism in society into an audio and visual story with a compelling context.
One of Usmar Ismail’s greatest legacies, Lewat Djam Malam (1954), went through a restoration process completed in 2012 by the L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory in Bologna, Italy, in collaboration with the World Cinema Foundation owned by senior director, one of the greatest and most influential directors in the history of cinema Martin Scorsese and the National Museum of Singapore.
The restoration of the film Lewat Djam Malam is one of the foundations that encourages the Indonesian film industry to consistently grow in the midst of change and digitalization. Today, we are witnessing firsthand the fruits of that great vision.
Indonesia’s film industry is now expanding beyond geographical boundaries, driven by rising production quality standards and global streaming platform penetration. Modern filmmakers are now part of the international stage, presenting authentic local narratives with cinematic execution. New filmmakers or directors continue to be present, along with other professions that make up the industry ecosystem, including investors.
This relay shows that cinema has not only survived the times but is also part of the journey of the global film and creative industry.
In the midst of rapid changes globally, what is the next direction of the Indonesian film industry?
