Culture is often best understood not through what separates communities, but through the traditions, stories and shared histories that bring them together. This November, the Malay Heritage Centre in Singapore invites visitors to explore these connections through the inaugural Teroka Nusantara Festival 2026, a three-day celebration of the Malay world’s cultural richness and enduring heritage.
Running from 6 to 8 November 2026, the festival takes its inspiration from the theme Rumah Orang Kita, meaning “A Home for Our Community”. The idea reflects a broader understanding of Malay identity in Singapore, placing it within the wider cultural landscape of the Nusantara, where generations of communities have exchanged influences through language, architecture, music, food and artistic expression.
At the heart of the celebration is an invitation to experience heritage beyond the traditional exhibition setting. The Rumah Kita Play Space introduces visitors to four distinctive architectural traditions from across the Malay Archipelago: Rumah Gadang from Padang, Rumoh Aceh, Rumah Limas and Rumah Joglo from Java. Meanwhile, the Nusa Budaya Kita cultural booths bring together traditional textiles, culinary heritage, games and musical instruments from Singapore and neighbouring regions, offering a closer look at the cultural expressions that have shaped the Malay world.
The festival’s programme extends into the performing arts, with the Rumah Orang Kita: Nusantara Arts Showcase bringing together cultural groups from Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. Through traditional and contemporary music and dance, the performances highlight how artistic traditions continue to evolve while remaining connected to their origins. Visitors can also discover the movements of zapin through family workshops, attend cultural talks and explore stories passed down through generations.
Beyond its cultural programme, the Teroka Bazaar adds another dimension to the experience, gathering local food and retail vendors in a lively setting that celebrates contemporary creativity alongside tradition.
Teroka Nusantara Festival serves as a reminder that identity is shaped by both history and the relationships we continue to build. By bringing different communities and generations into one shared space, the festival offers an opportunity to rediscover familiar traditions, encounter new perspectives and appreciate the cultural connections that continue to define the Nusantara.
